The Bible does not tell us that angels can, or cannot, have sexual relations with women! In the Scriptures, they are always referred to in the masculine gender (Michael, Gabriel, Raphael), but there is no distinction between male and female angels; they seem to be asexual. Furthermore, they do not have sex organs while in the angelic state (neither will we, if and when we get there). The Bible does not mention anything about the private lives of angels, but it seems clear that they cannot have sex, at least not in heaven. God’s commands for angels couldn’t be clearer: they “cannot marry or be given into marriage.” (Matthew 22:30) (Luke 20:34-36). This is why many Christians believe it is not possible. Others think it is, because there is no specific prohibition against them having sex, and they have the power to take human form in a way that makes them indistinguishable from men (Hebrews 13:2), which could include their sexual organs. Additionally, they can become so handsome and irresistible that the men of Sodom fought with Lot to make him deliver the angels to them so that they could have intercourse with them (Genesis 19:1-4). Some believe that the sons of God (Genesis 6:1) mentioned in the Book as choosing wives among the “daughters of men” could not have intercourse, but impregnated women the way God impregnated Mary. They assert that God did not have sex with Mary but she got pregnant and gave birth to Jesus. On the other hand, many of us are convinced that these sons of God were fallen angels; now demons. Rebellious, cast out of heaven as punishment for their disobedience, they took women as wives for the wrong reasons. They did it in a clear violation of God’s instructions! They were prohibited to marry or given into marriage to establish a family, let alone have children. They did it because the “daughters of man were beautiful,” implying that their main interest in these women was lust and sex. This is in total contradiction of God’s commands, for which they paid a hefty price. This conviction did not stop me from considering the possibility that Satan and his companions seduced the daughters of men to produce a race that would grow so large as to corrupt the human population, to prevent the birth of Jesus.
The apocryphal Book of Enoch reinforces the argument defended by those who believe angels took women as wives and had children with them by affirming that the giants mentioned in Genesis (Genesis 6:1-4) were the result of fallen angels having sex with the daughters of men. Although the Book of Enoch makes for an entertaining reading, it should be read like a fictional work, not as a source of biblical information. There are many descriptions in this book that defy realism. For instance, the “giants” are close to 450 feet tall. Just for comparison, Goliath (the giant that David killed), was a man of fewer than 10 feet against the 450 feet giants mentioned in the Book of Enoch. I am confident in saying that the Enoch of the Bible did not write this barbarism! However, you would be surprised at how many people believe it is true. Many, rather believe this myth than the Bible.
Now, let’s take a look at the root behind the arguments! The question raised by most students of the Bible is: who are the sons of God mentioned in Genesis? Most biblical scholars believe they were angels, Satan included, because the Book itself says so (Job 1:6 and Job 38:7). The evidence points at them as fallen angels because the ones in heaven wouldn’t gamble their status as messengers of God. They know that sex is reserved for married people, and they “cannot marry or be given into marriage.” As a consequence of these commands, they are prohibited from having sexual relations, even if they transform themselves into human form. Unless their desire for sex is so intense that they decide to violate God’s strict rules, and face His severe punishment, which is not an acceptable consideration because why would they risk God’s ire by having sex with an inferior being? (Jude:1-6).
I hope you understand this is the time before the flood when Satan’s hordes were running rampant on the earth, and demonic forces led humans to perversion, which resulted in these fallen angels taking human form to copulate with women, get them pregnant, and originate the giants described in Genesis (Genesis 6:4). At one time, all of them, Lucifer included (Job 1:6), were sons of God (Revelation 12:7-9). (I found five references in the Old Testament (Genesis 6:2, 4; Job 1:6; 21; 38:7) where angels are called sons of God). Then, Lucifer fell out of God’s grace and took one-third of them with him; those are the ones (“fallen angels”) that eventually forced God to destroy His creation. I believe this to be one of the hardest things our Lord faced, having to eliminate what He created: His children. His displeasure was such that He didn’t leave any provisions for the salvation of these fallen angels. Except for Noah and his family, the entire human race fell into sin, with no interest in feeling the inaudible voice of their conscience, or obeying God’s commands. The wickedness and perversion of the humans described in Genesis 6, left the Lord without choices but to start a new humanity by bringing the flood to the world of the ungodly.
We see around the world today more violence and perversion than in Noah’s times. Would it be appropriate to think that God may be using the current plague to punish our generation for its many sins? One of the biggest causes of His displeasure is that we have converted the family, a man and a woman joined by marriage to procreate, into a joke. As in the days before the Flood, humanity took his eyes off God and converted the family into the many definitions in use today. The Bible (Matthew 24:36-39) clearly states that in the last days, just before the second coming of Jesus, it will be like it was before the flood, and before Sodom and Gomorrah. Nobody knows when not even the angels!
